I have the pleasure of being there on a few occasions during the blooms. Maria is right about the Jefferson memorial. It is a magical place to take in the river and surrounding area. Somehow I doubt the festivities in DC are quite as intense as Japan. I'm glad that you guys got a chance to take a break and relax. I agree that DC is also a great place to see the blossoms. I doubt most of the people that go have any idea why they're special. They also had a huge Kite Festival that day. People were all over the National Mall running around trying to get their kites in the air. It makes me giggle to see 5 year olds running as far and fast as they can and when they look back, they've been dragging their kite the whole way. I was at the one in Washington, DC on Saturday. Washington D.C. is actually the famous spot to see cherry blossoms in the U.S. They were a gift from the Japanese government from a long time ago (I have no brain for dates!). They're planted around the tidal basin of the Potomac River. The Jefferson Memorial is a good spot to see them from. Much to my surprise there is actually a <a href="http://www.nationalcherryblossomfestival.org/cms/index.php?id=390" rel="nofollow">National Cherry Blossom Festival</a> and the site has a lot of pictures. It's beautiful to see them, but the atmosphere is not nearly as entertaining as what you've described. Wow, Japan sounds like such a trippy place!
