talking

I got a last minute email from one of the guys in the Austin Society, a local pick up group, saying that a speaker had canceled and they were looking for someone to fill in. Awesome. I love public speaking and have actually been meaning to do more of it (in fact, I’m thinking about giving talks in every city I hit when I start my RV trip).

There are pick up groups pretty much everywhere now. They’re great because they can provide a good support and accountability system, but they there’s a certain rut that they can push members into. Often times you’ll see members  totally overwhelmed with ideas, tactics, and styles, that actually get in the way of real progress.

So I decided to take it back to the basics and talk about the fundamental things a student of pickup should focus on. The topics I covered are focus, storytelling, being yourself, and your comfort zone.

I videotaped the talk so that I could post it for you. The sound is pretty low and it’s dark by the end, but I think the video should be valuable for any budding pickup artist.  I also have ten minutes of question and answers but didn’t post them because the video was totally black by then.

Because of Youtube’s rules, it’s cut into three parts:

Enjoy! If you’re into pick up or want to see what it’s about, take my free ten day online course at www.makeherchaseyou.com. You can also get my book on Amazon.

Thanks to the Austin Society for inviting and hosting me, and to Mike for setting it up.

the sound is really really bad, could you write up the key points you talked about?

The sound is terrible. I gave up after 2 minutes

Whats wrong with you Tynan? You used to be awesome. I used to tell all my friends about that Life Nomadic guy. Don’t let yourself and your fans down. Don’t look at the wrong people for advice, either. That Chris Guillbeau guy is a douchebag on so many levels. About the only thing he’s better at than you is attracting lame people. His comments are full of Yay sayers that agree with everything. They’re watching him for life-porn! You’re more than porn. You can be an inspiration. Your nomadic lifestyle inspired my dream lifestyle. Well you and Tim Ferriss (whom I found trough you). Yea, sometimes you’re a little lame (your pickup book is so 1.0, nothing compared to the Blueprint, I wouldn’t recommend it to anyone). But then again you have awesome adventures, do CrossFit and other stuff. It is good that you recognize one thing: being enthusiastic and then not following through sucks. Posting after the results came in is better. Also you are often enthusiastic about such trivial things I feel I can’t trust your judgement without considering 2nd sources. Which sucks. Summary: continue developing your strengths, which are being awkward and funny. Defy social boundaries. Show us there’s something worthwhile outside the box, like you used to. And don’t imitate lame douchebaggery when you can do better.

Dude, if all you like is his travel stuff, read it on Gadling.

I think it’s important to point out that this guy doesn’t speak for all (or even most) of your readers, Tynan. Do what you do, man. I’m still reading.

I’m not big on the pick-up thing, but this isn’t my site, and there are plenty of recent posts I’ve enjoyed.

@John and Jak

Thank you for your comments– I appreciate them.

I can’t please everyone all the time. If I had a niche site about one topic, I could do that.

Like anyone, my life goes through phases. A reader who gets really attached to one phase and reads for that topic won’t be around forever, and I’m okay with that. People who read because they like my attitude will probably always find interesting posts.

You used to be in project Hollywood with Tyler Durden. So I’d like to ask ya something. What do you think of the new, post “the blueprint decoded” RSD? Have you paid any attention to it? I guess you’ve strayed away from the community, but I assure you this community is much different than it used to be and you might find it intersting. Tell me what you think.

i just finished the 1st part.. but wow, some really good fucking points in there. the sound is kinda weak, so if you have the motivation … typing up some of the main points would be useful….or trying to fix the audio.

either way, you get used to the audio after a couple minutes anyways and start to focus on your voice.

great stuff tho, dont know what everyone is complaining about. you seriously just opened my eyes to some shit i never realized, Thank You!

Great talk Herbal. I’d definitely like to see more of these. You can learn a lot more in a few minutes of hearing someone speak than in a few minutes of reading a text.

Plus people get a sense of your body language and enthusiasm.

As far as the sound, if you turn it up, you start getting used to the background noise. Almost seemed like it got better by 2nd video or I adapted (sound transmit better at night?)

Though I have to ask was there a rattle snake in the background entire time…cause sure sounded like!

I can assure you I’m not just here for one thing. I’m interested in travel (but you suddenly stopped), pick-up (but what you write about it seems like the old kind of button pushing pre-Blueprint kind of stuff, well no wonder if you quit), diet (but you never write about that anymore plus I tried and didn’t like vegan), exercise (where I love CrossFit and was excited when you found it but you never write about it), entrepreneurship (never write about it anymore), even the W126 Benz. I’m also interested in the RV stuff and asketicism, which I try to practise myself. But you rarely write about that. Sometimes you mention you’re a vegan or a minimalist or “top of the PU food-chain”(which makes it sound like top of the WoW clan you joined). But we already know all that so it’s not helpful or inspirational.

What did you write about in the last few months? Some stuff reviews, some philosophical stuff which was pretty good, some whining(which I do all the time, so no complaining here). But nothing remotely outside the box.

This video was great other than the sound quality. Although a lot of this info is in Make Her Chase You.
