So, a few days ago I decided to drop everything and focus on Life Nomadic. I’ve done the focusing, now it’s time to do the dropping.

I’m hoping that some or all of my businesses can be taken over by readers. As I’ve met readers over the years I’ve been really impressed with most of them and would trust them to run my businesses.

For each I’m happy to stay involved in a minimal role, offering advice and strategy, doing interviews to promote things, etc. I just can’t be involved in running them or worrying about them. When I’ve been in this role in previous businesses, things have gone very well.

I’m willing to split profits and be partners or sell each one outright. I believe in all of them, so I’d rather be cut in.

Without further ado:

Conversion Doubler

Conversion Doubler probably has the most profit potential. It really is THE BEST in its field.

To take this over you should be a team of a PHP programmer and a marketer, or be good at both. Right now it works on most major hosts (Dreamhost and Hostgator, for example), but not on all of them. A decent PHP programmer could fix that, or a marketer could just warn people or bundle it with a hosting package and set it up for them.

I have no way to judge the quality of my code, but I think it ranges based on how early I wrote the section. A lot was rewritten as I got better. None of it is documented well, but I think it’s all relatively easy to follow.

The challenge for a marketer will be to explain multivariate testing, explain why it’s so important, and find good sources of customers.

I would rather not charge for this and get a percentage, but will consider selling outright.

Daily 15

Daily 15 has a lot of potential and I didn’t really get into it enough to tap that. Almost 2000 people signed up for the RSS on day one, but it has since tapered off to a stable 650.

I get lots of e-mails from people who really like the idea, so someone who was able to write new fun and useful challenges would probably be very successful at this. It’s based on wordpress and I made a custom theme for it. I also have some very rough PHP software I wrote to build a database of challenges and automatically schedule them based on category and recency.

Someone with a self help style site may want to keep this ad free and use it for traffic and to keep people engaged. I’d be willing to do that and split the branding between my site and yours.

Best in The Land

I hate to see this go because I still have a ton of things I want to write about.

If we partner on this one I can offer TONS of products with a quick outline of what makes it the best. You just write the articles, get affiliate links for everything, and promote the site.

Despite having very few entries, I get more people telling me this is their favorite of my sites than any other.

Skinny Snob

I’m not sure this one is really worth taking over. The book is okay, but not world class. It could use some updating. I’d be happy to provide knowledge for this, but not actually write any more.

The real asset is a list I built through adwords and a landing page of around 16,000 names, e-mails, and amount of weight they want to lose. It’s all in Aweber, so it’s easy to send them e-mails.

Marketers say that lists are worth $1 per month per user. I have no idea how that’s true, but if you do then maybe this is a good project for you. I haven’t e-mailed the list in years so some may not still be interested.

Make Her Chase You

I think this one has a ton of potential too. The book is excellent and gets close to zero returns. I also have a good, but not great, guide to being a wingman, a very good 30 day e-mail course, and a very good 60+ minute hidden mic pickup recording.

The e-mail list for it is around 15k and they really like newsletters and have been e-mailed recently. If we partner, I’m happy to provide advice to be used in the newsletter, but not write them myself.

I also have a professionally (well, by me but done excellently) formatted paperback book. I’m going to make one push to sell this to readers of this site (you), as well as to the list.bookpreview

I think the book is good enough to get published and do very well. Tim Ferriss’ agent was interested at one point and we spoke on the phone, but nothing every came of it. If you are an agent or know one (and want a finder’s fee), maybe you could help in that way

www.makeherchaseyou.com

I’m VERY open to out of the box ideas and proposals. I respect all of my projects too much to sell them to lowball offers.

In my ideal world each one would be taken over by a reader who is really interested in that particular business and I could offer some guidance to add to the reader’s expertise and hard work.

I won’t allow my subscribers to the MHCY or SkinnySnob lists to be spammed. I’m all for newsletters that are valuable and also sell, but not for just hammering them with sales offers and burning through the list.

So… let me know what you propose. Don’t send me e-mails asking me what I’m looking for. Show me what you can offer. Ask questions about anything.

huh, I guess that book really influenced you.
I like that you are taking immediate action, only few people do

What about LN makes it the type of commitment that it takes giving up your other stuff to achieve excellence?
Where’s the dip?

Vincent

Tynan,

Do you not see the irony in all of this? In nearly all of your ventures you are in the DIP. You are close to success. Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger calls this very same phenomenon the “pain period.” He is not the most talented actor, he is was not the most naturally strong bodybuilder, and he was not the best politician. He himself proclaims that his one true skill to success in all of these things, has been his ability to push through the pain period. You are in this period and you have been in multiple instances in the past, and every single time, without fail, you’ve thrown it out the window. Clearly it boils down to the fact that you aren’t getting the results as fast as you want.

There seems to be a pattern here. About twice a year you post about how you are re-prioritizing, that you have found out that you need to channel your focus. You need to focus on output and productivity, and you are going to take some new approach to get there. You do this well for a period of time; just well enough to get you into the DIP (hey, most people don’t even get that far). Yet every single time you hit a brick wall with one of your projects you push it aside and move on to the next. Then you start a new project and reach the DIP, only to slide down the slope instead of climbing it. The cycle repeats, and repeats. You have a great, innovative mind… and I think you’d agree that you should be seeing a lot more of the results you want than you are.

It is not the quality of your products, I know first-hand. What you are lacking is that you aren’t seeing things through. You have great ideas and expect them to catch on like wildfire with little input once they are on the brink. Finish, finish, finish. I’d rather see a project fail miserably with 100% effort, than to give up on it when just one or two more thrusts are needed to push it over the top. I know you hate marketing, but there are other options. You don’t need to spend 12 hours per day doing it. Maybe 5 minutes if you use the correct avenues. Yes, shed the few projects that have little profit potential (You’re smart enough to know which ones), or that wouldn’t make you happy. Hire someone (you cite Tim Ferriss but neglect his ideas, he’d be ashamed), find a partner, go to a marketing firm. Instead your going to give away your ideas? I’d truthfully be sad to see someone make a killing off your creation, especially with such little work that some of them need.

I was debating whether to write this, because I realize my past few comments have leaned towards criticism and negativity. That’s not my style at all, especially towards one of the select few people who “get it” and don’t really need input on most issues… but I think this ones too important. At the very least, make sure you get a good cut in all of this, you have a lot of leverage. Good luck with whatever you choose to do.

Dave: The reason I’m choosing LN is because I’m unwilling to give it up. I have several long term ideas for it that I think will make it very profitable. I’m also excited to work with Todd on it. We have complementary interests and skills.

Vincent:

I agree with you 100%. I am in the dip of all of those things. I also believe, as you probably do, that this inability or unwillingness to follow through to the end is my biggest problem.

And that’s why I’m quitting all but one. What lies on the other side of Life Nomadic’s dip is a lot more interesting to me than what lies on the other dips, and to push through a dip I need to remove my other distractions. When I’m in five dips I can always chip away at one, but move to the next before I actually get out of it. With one left I can’t do that.

I’ll be thrilled to see someone make a killing off one of my creations. I’m quitting them willingly and won’t make a deal that I’m not happy with. My ideal goal would be for someone to take over each one and each of them make a killing. I think it’s possible in all, except maybe the Skinny Snob.
