The other day in a moment of distraction I went onto YouTube and watched an old video of Mystery and me. I scrolled down to the comments, which I’m sure the authors never expect the subjects of the video to read.

There are, of course, tons of haters bashing all of us. In one clip we’re hanging out with Miss Toronto, and they call her a five and say they wouldn’t even talk to her. But that’s okay. I understand that being chronically single brings a certain level of frustration that can both lead to trying to learn pickup and also to venting on the internet.

There is also a lot of speculation about Project Hollywood, or more accurately, The Game. How much of it was real? How much of it was exaggerated? Since no one who actually lived there has come out and publicly talked about it, I’ll quickly run through the common speculations.

First, EVERY event in the book actually took place. Neil didn’t make anything up. A few of the things happened in different orders and were swapped around, but this is minor. As far as I can tell, these sorts of swaps were made to make the story flow better, not to change what happened. In other words, causes and effects weren’t swapped around.

Most of the characters were dead on. I thought Neil did a great job with everyone with the one exception of Tyler. And even with Tyler, I don’t think he actually ascribed any actions to him that he didn’t do.

Tyler and Neil were NEVER on great terms. Whatever caused it was there before I knew either of them, so I can’t say much about that. At the end of Project Hollywood, from what I understand, there was a lot of bad blood between them. I don’t think that Neil intentionally painted Tyler as an evil dude—I think that’s just how he felt at the time and it colored his perceptions. The motives and behind the scenes plotting that he assumed Tyler was engaged in just weren’t true.

On the other hand, Neil and I were on great terms when I left. As a result, my character is surprisingly positive. TONS was left out of the book. Believe me, if Neil wanted to make me into a bad guy he would have had more than enough ammo to do so. And that probably goes for just about anyone in the book. Interpretations of actions could have varied wildly.

The other thing about the book is that, by necessity, it’s a highlight reel. It covers the most tense parts of the year. There were tensions and drama, but there were also a lot of times that the whole house got together to go out to dinner or to the clubs or whatever. Most people got along reasonably well for most of the time.

There’s also the issue of the quality of girls that were brought around the house. Was it ALL bikini models? Nope, not at all. Certain people at certain times were more focused on quantity than quality, whether that was just to practice or because they just weren’t that picky. At the same time, there WERE a ton of incredibly attractive women there. I’d say that at one point or another every resident of the house was involved with a girl you’d objectively rate as a 9 or 10.

If anyone has any specific questions about the Game or Project Hollywood, ask in the comments and I’ll try to answer them all.

How does the quarters game work? I remember reading about it in the book, but the only quarters game I know of is the drinking game.

Tynan
Nov 16th, 2008 @ 3:05 pm

We had a rectangular ice bucket that we would put at one end of the living room. We stand on the other end on a line.

Each of us plays with his own quarters. You try to throw them and get them into the ice bucket. Because of the distance and the shape of the ice bucket, this is really hard.

Whoever gets a quarter into the bucket first gets all of the quarters that had missed. I think the biggest pot was over 150 quarters.

The game stopped because we kept cajoling people (notably the girls that Style brought over) into playing with us, but they almost always beat us and eventually we ran out of quarters.

Interesting post! I always wondered how much of The Game was fact and how much was fiction. It certainly made for a good story.

So you never got that sleep schedule to work, huh? I’m thinking about trying it when I have 10 days to waste.

When I read “The Game” and my view on Tyler was he is a bad man. But, when I read your blog and from time to time, you talk about Tyler. You paint him a good man and my view changed.

It is always good to get a balance views from different perspectives to gain a better understanding.

I’ve always wondered if Tyler would be as successful as he is today if he wasn’t portrayed as the bad guy in The Game. I remember reading some of his old writing and it seemed like that negative event really helped shape his life.

Tynan

Acuity: I got the sleep schedule to work after the book was published. In fact, writing about it is how this site got started.

Matt: Exactly. You can also read his old posts on ASF and see that he’s always been pretty helpful and positives. I’m not saying he didn’t do ANYTHING wrong. I know that former employees have some issues with RSD at large, but in my experience he is overwhelmingly honest and well intentioned.

I think he made the best lemonade he could out of some lemons. I think he would have been successful either way. He’s one of the most determined and hard working people I know.

if you werent that busy, and these same guys would like to make a project hollywood #2, just as the last one, would you hang out again with them?

also, who did you hate the most aside from your problems with mystery, in the house?

luis

what about jlaix was he a cool dude? and how good was he?

What’s your opinion on Mystery having a show? A good blog post could probably be written here….

Tynan
Nov 17th, 2008 @ 12:02 pm

Jorge: I’m not sure I’d live there again since I’m now a nomad, but I’d definitely hang out with them again. Other than Papa I’ve hung out with all of the permanent residents within the last year.

I didn’t hate anyone. Papa was actually my best friend in the house when I first moved in, but by the end we had a falling out over some financial stuff. I haven’t talked to him since leaving and probably won’t.

Luis: Jlaix is very cool and is one of my favorite pickup guys to hang out with. We’ve never actually gone out to pick up together so I don’t know firsthand how good he is, but everyone tells me he’s very good and I know him well enough to know that none of his (crazy) stories are made up.

Dan: I’m thrilled that he has a show. I love watching it because it’s classic Mystery and it’s fun to see him on the screen. I think this season is a lot better than last season, but I’m not exactly sure why. The only thing is… I don’t like how the WORST guy gets kicked off every time. Doesn’t that make it so that the one PUA at the end is the one who needed the help the least?

That said, it’s just entertainment and I never miss an episode. I’m rooting for Simeon.

You mentioned in the past that if you had to do it all over again you would have taken a seminar on pickup. Who would you take it from and why?

What things did you learn from pickup that you still use in your relationships and what things have you abandoned?

You have gone full circle from a guy who was obsessed with fashion to a minimalist. Few people have done that. What are the pros and cons of each?

Tynan
Nov 17th, 2008 @ 12:47 pm

Kevin:

1. If I had a time machine I’d probably take a Mystery workshop. These days I think RSD has really put a lot into making the best workshops and so I’d take one from them. It would be tough to decide between them and Mystery, but I think he isn’t even teaching them anymore.

2. I’ve kept pretty much ALL of the ideas and mindsets and philosophies and discarded all of the lines. Most people do that eventually, I think. If you read or have read my book, that’s pretty much everything I do and don’t do.

3. Fashion matters most for opening and least for relationships. The farther down that path you go, the less it matters. If you have the first five minutes down solid, your clothes don’t really matter much.

The fact is that I probably spend less than 20 hours in a club per year now and 8740 hours a year living my life. So I pick the clothes that are best for living my life.

Unless you’re in that phase where your life IS pickup, get three wool shirts and one pair of convertible pants for every day use, and one really cool outfit to wear to clubs. No one notices that you’re always wearing the same thing. I have a very successful PUA friend who wears the same thing every single night.

We have a lair in Kansas City, and we are trying to get together a Project KC type situation, how would you advise we go about this, what should we avoid?

FredB
Nov 17th, 2008 @ 6:25 pm

Hi, you mentioned nobody who actually lived in the house spoke out about their experience. I would disagree as Barry Kirkey(26) on his podcast thing does a lot of talking(and a lot of ripping) on his days in Project Hollywood. I would like to know what your thoughts are on him?

lachlan
Nov 17th, 2008 @ 7:54 pm

Who in ur mind was the best at pick up?
and did u call each other by your real names (neil) or by ur pua names(style)?

Tynan
Nov 17th, 2008 @ 8:09 pm

Spot: I don’t really have any good advice. Don’t date each other’s exes. :)

FredB: I haven’t heard Barry’s podcast. Someone told me he talks a lot of crap about me on it, but all the ones that mention me can’t be downloaded. That’s strange to me because we always got along well and I thought he was a good guy and very funny. Anyway, he never really lived there although he did stay for a while. I don’t really remember how long he was there for.

Iachlan: It really depends. I haven’t gone out with any of these guys in a long time so I could be WAY off. My guesses: Mystery probably has the best club game for 10s. He’s amazing. Style is probably the best at maintaining relationships. Tyler is probably the best teacher. Again… all of those guys are neck and neck with each other and I haven’t been with any of them in field in years.

We call each other by our PUA names. Even Katya calls me Herbal.

If Project KC did get started, what would be the odds of you coming to hang out?

Robert
Nov 18th, 2008 @ 1:39 am

One thing I’m curious about is the conversion rate, say for example Mystery approached a 10 in a club, how often would he get a number or get her to come home with him? Was he better in or out of a club? I’m not looking for specific numbers or anything just a general idea.

Nov 18th, 2008 @ 9:38 am

Thanks for this post Tynan. I remember you talked a bit about some of this stuff in the PickUp Podcast episode we did about Project Hollywood, but it’s always nice to see a follow-up.

How surreal is it that your old roommates (and yourself) are more or less famous by this point?

-Jordan

Tynan
Nov 18th, 2008 @ 10:17 am

Spot: Pretty low, mainly because I can’t imagine a scenario where I’d end up in Kansas City.

Robert: Mystery has got to be around 100% for at least getting a number. Beyond that it’s difficult to estimate how often the girl will even answer her phone. We all had problems with that, but it wouldn’t surprise me at all if he has it totally figured out now. He’s definitely in his element in a club so maybe a little better there.

Jordan: I’ll be back in NYC soon I think. If you’ve got an open slot I can come back on the show live. It’s totally surreal to see how famous everyone is. VERY few people recognize me, but so many people have read the book. I had no idea so many people even read.

Everything in that was writeen about Courtney Love seemed a bit far fetched. Was she really that loopy?

Tynan
Nov 18th, 2008 @ 7:36 pm

Fag Destroyer: I’ve never been asked to be on the show and from what I hear it’s basically a lot of negativity and complaining. Then again, 26 has a unique sense of humor, so it might just be people misinterpreting him.

Victor15b: She really was wild. You couldn’t spend half an hour around her without something bizarre happening.

Strangely the only questions that spring to mind from ProHo are not pickup related. How did you get Frank Abagnale on the phone for Courtney Love?
Also what happened to the limo you got for the house?

Hey Tynan – good read and great site! Is the Matador of Love PUA in the book Mystery’s wing in his TV show?

Nov 21st, 2008 @ 5:53 am

hey ty, nice post. i have to say i wish Neil didnt go as hard on tyler and his camp as he did in the book, because the book put me off RSD, until one day i started doing some reading, and now i love RSD, i even went to go to a free seminar done by Tim. RSD all the way wooooo

ps was mystery really as psychotic, as he is decribed in the book, where he cries like a baby, and starts demolishing the house? he doesnt seem like that on TV at all..

Nov 21st, 2008 @ 3:07 pm

Ty,

Definitely. Let me know well-enough in advance and we can do a satellite radio show together instead of the podcast. It’ll be fun for you to go to SiriusXM and talk to 18.5 million people with us. ;)

The Reel Deal
Nov 30th, 2008 @ 7:24 am

Personally, I was never a fan of Neil in person or otherwise. I never felt he was genuine; like everything was calculated in some way. That really puts me off about anybody. Then again, that may just be Hollywood. It wouldn’t be anything new. I guess that’s the reason I moved back to the ATX from there. Where ever you go, there you are, yet still, some places you just prefer.

Btw, I meant to say, thank you for the referral (and you don’t even realize it). Maybe one day we can swap Pamplona/travel stories if our paths ever cross. -N

Dec 2nd, 2008 @ 9:09 pm

Hey Tynan,

Do you have a favorite pickup during your time at Pro-Ho? Like that moment with the perfect girl when every aspect of your game just game together, similar to what Neil experienced with the 10 & 11 in Miami?

And have you surpassed it since then?

Bruno
Aug 1st, 2009 @ 4:28 pm

Is this discussion still active? I noticed the last post was in Dec of last year.
If so, my question has always been; how good are these techniques for a guy that’s already pretty good with women (but not pulling a girl EVERY weekend, and she’s not always a 9 or 10 either). What material would you recommend reading?
