I just got my amazing new camera, the Panasonic GF1, so naturally I wanted to put it to use and make a video. Make videos with that thing is a ton of fun, so expect more videos soon (skateboards and mopeds coming up soon).

The first video is a tour of my RV, including a couple of the modifications I’ve made to it. Things change fast, though, as you can see from the photo above. The moped and Aeron aren’t in the video.

I have a bunch of upgrades I’ll be doing around Thanksgiving, so I might post a short video update then. I’ll be putting in wood floors, maybe granite countertops, and removing a bunch of heavy items (awning, heater, air conditioner).

I mentioned a while back that I was going to start writing some mini ebooks on specific topics. My first one will be about how to live in an RV and should be out in a month or two.

Enjoy the video (click through to watch in HD for maximum enjoyment):

Very cool! I’ve followed your RV saga since the beginning, it’s neat to actually see it “in person” so to speak. Hope to do something similar someday :-)

(and isn’t the GF1 a fantastic little camera? speaking as a professional photographer, it’s been one of the most exiting developments in digital cameras in years…)

Really dig the rv man. Great video!

Oct 26th, 2009 @ 12:37 pm

Wow! That was incredibly good quality video. The autofocus, when it adjusted quickly, seemed to work great. And incredibly depth of field.

Well done on the tour. The only thing you didn’t do was show us what was in the kitchen cabinets/fridge. I would have really liked to see that.

Great quality footage. Did you use a separate microphone?

Oct 26th, 2009 @ 4:39 pm

THAT. WAS. AWESOME.

I was debating whether or not to get a small studio or live the mobile lifestyle and this video just put me over the top. Home on wheels it is.

Loved the life nomadic book and I am SUPER PUMPED for the RV book. stop posting blogs so you can release that book in a week :)

Awesome video, I’m still seriously considering getting an RV after I graduate, I just trying to figure out my source of income after I get out of school.

The Sprint mifi is neat. You have a pretty sick deal with the $68 for your Sprint plan. I have the 500 minute employee referral offer for $59.99 (the 3G version of SERO, they wouldn’t let me keep it when I got the Pre.

Isn’t the internet really limited on the mifi though? It’s like a 5gb a month limit right?

@Ed Z I love the GF1. My last camera was released in 2004, so it’s also the first exciting camera in a long time for me.

@JP Thanks, no separate mic. The sound quality was better than expected, but I may get a mic for future videos.

@Tim I have unlimited bandwidth on my Mifi. I used 25gb last month.

@Christian + Peetuhr More requests for in-fridge footage than I expected. You’d see vegetables, tons of tempeh, ezekiel bread, and not much else.

@IK I made it in 3D Studio Max and Adobe After Effects

@Tynan, unlimited bandwidth? How is that possible? I looked on the Sprint site and only saw 5gb and 300mb plans. You get it all for only $68? What kind of data plan do you have with them?

Did they let you keep your SERO plan with your TouchPro 2? The only thing I can think of is that you have the $30 SERO plan and an equivalent $30 plan for unlimited?

That’s insane, you definitely need to do a post on that when you get a spare moment

Oct 27th, 2009 @ 9:45 pm

Awesome RV!

Have you ever thought about converting the engine to run on used cooking oil/grease? (assuming your RV is diesel)

Tynan,

Great video! After watching it I went on Craigslist to look at motorhomes. When will you new ebooks be coming out? One small disappoint I had with Life Nomadic was that there wasn’t more about how you earn your income, perphas you could expand that section into it’s own ebook in the future. I am also interested in how you found your personal assistant and how you make use of the PA’s services as well as the costs and how the PA responds, maybe that could be a future post or ebook.

Happy days to you!

Gruntie

Tynan, can you elaborate on how you go about choosing where to park your RV on streets and any issues to consider?

i.e. which kinds of neighborhoods are best, how long you can stay put, any issues with cops, parking authorities, or neighbors.

Tynan, love your website and especially your mobile lifestyle. I’ve been looking at RV’s and have narrowed them down to a PleasureWay Ascent Sprinter Diesel (small, but mobile) and a custom-made Sportsmobile (made in Austin!)…..

I currently have a home which is (fortunately) paid for, but I am thinking about making a career change and (therefore) a lifestyle change. There are MANY people doing similar lifestyles as you have undertaken, so I find comfort in that fact. However, you have been great in showing all the issues, facts and challenges regarding such a lifestyle. Many thanks.

That said, I would appreciate your comments on the reliability on your VW RV engine/platform. I’m torn between a Sprinter platform, which is a Mercedes diesel platform, versus a Ford gas platform, which is a bit less reliable but more affordable for repairs.

Also, do you store your RV or some personal belongings somewhere while you are away on trips? I don’t have family to depend upon, so I would need to stash some things in a self-storage place.

Again, your thoughts would be appreciated. Thanks!

My. God.

My mind is blown. Thanks for taking the time to put this together. Very, very interesting.

@Tim It used to be unlimited… I got in on it back then and they can’t change it on me now. I kept SERO with the TP2… I might not have gotten the phone if it wasn’t an option.

I pay $45/mo for the data card and $23/mo for SERO. Check this out: http://www.fatwallet.com/forums/hot-deals/897834/

I also have a few other tricks that aren’t reproducible, so I won’t share them.

@Doc It’s not Diesel

@Gruntie It’s hard for me to explain how to make money because it varies so much from person to person. I’m going to do a video with a financial expert on Friday, though, so stay tuned for that.

@Mike They stopped making it in 2005. Starting in 1997 they made them a foot longer and added too many cabinets, which is why I got a 1996. If I were doing it all over, I’d still get the same RV.

@snackies I’m going to cover that in my upcoming book on RV living, but basically with a small RV you can park anywhere a car can park as long as you keep a low(ish) profile.

@Dave The Sprinter is a great platform with VERY high gas mileage. It is very thin, though. Six months ago I helped a friend design a Sportsmobile, which he just brought up to SF yesterday. I visited their workshop in Fresno, too. They make really top quality stuff and really listen to what you need. I recommend them highly.

When I’m off on trips I get an outdoor parking spot for the RV for about $60/mo. Outdoor is better because my solar controller will automatically condition my battery.

@Mike Thanks! Glad you liked it.

Looks like videos are a success… I will produce more of them.

@Tynan

I called Sprint to try and switch back to my SERO plan, but the SERO plan isn’t compatible with the Palm Pre unfortunately. If I were to switch to an eligible phone they would put me back on my Sprint SERO plan which is pretty sweet.

I’ve been hoping for pictures or a video of the inside of your RV since I started reading your blog a couple months ago. Glad to finally see it happen. Looks awesome, very livable. I could totally see myself living like that someday. After reading a lot of the posts on your blog along with your book (Life Nomadic), you’ve inspired me to want to live minimalistically and start traveling. College is sort of standing in my way right now, though (of the traveling part). And, unfortunately, it doesn’t seem like doing both is really possible.

Liked the mobile wifi setup, looking forward to sprint 4G coming out in Austin by the end of the year.

I cannot wait until you post those mini e-books! My girlfriend and I have been seriously considering getting an RV and living in it. You’ve quite inspired us. :D All I’ve been doing for the past 2 weeks is researching RV’s (we looked at our first Rialta, a 1998, yesterday and LOVED it!), solar power, etc. I’m having tons of fun learning on my own. I can see why you chose to do this! :) Keep up the great work and thank you so much for sharing it with everyone!

Hi Tynan – love the video, it’s a great look at your lifestyle. Question – I know you’ve said this 1996 RV is the cat’s meow, but have you seen anything on the more recent market, like in the last couple years, that is comparable? Trying to track down a 1996 model RV can be tough.

Dec 2nd, 2009 @ 12:13 pm

Man I love the quality of this video. It really is interested how efficiently you have learned to use space.

Notice you got a little haircut since the summer. Still looks good though!

You never have problems with just parking that on the street all over town?

hi tynan,

i ran across your web site a few years ago when looking up the costco return policy. i have 4 adult kids and we all got a big laugh out of the penguin and pool thing. my oldest boy had a wallaby for a while so it struck a chord. i am much older than most of your followers but i do get a kick out of your stuff. i restored a 38′ bus coach that is 20 years old so i love rv’s. however mine has a 311 gallon diesel tank and gets 6.5mpg. but i do have a bit more room but parking is a tad harder than with yours. my wife and i spent the summer two years ago going to BC and then down the coast highway all the way and it was a ball.

and i do live in a 6br house so i dont have to pull my bathroom out to use it.

you are very entertaining to read about. happy rv’ing.

tom
